Two More Qualify In Ploughing Title
Two more qualifying rounds have been held for the New Zealand ploughing championships for the Atlantic Silver Plough which will be held in the Prebbleton-Broadfield district on May 11, the day before the world championships begin.
The latest qualifying round was held on Saturday in the Nelson district when P. McCallum, of Blenheim, was the winner. McCallum has qualified before for the championships. In second place was I. M. Jordan, of Blenheim, and G. Carter, of Greenpark, was third. Earlier in the week P. Carter, of Greenpark qualified to plough in the New Zealand final when he won a qualify-
ing round in Marlborough. Making his first appearance in a New Zealand final at Gore last year, Carter won the Ford trophy for the ploughman under 23 gaining most points and also the W. G. Millar trophy for the Young Fanners’ Club member scoring most points. Carter was sixth in the final. In second place in Marlborough was I. M. Jordan and P. McCallum was third. Messrs E. A. E. Fairhall (Blenheim), B. Scott (Nelson) and D. J. Stewart (Rakaia) judged both qualifying events. At Blenheim P. Carter had ploughed a good plot under very dry condition, said Mr Stewart.
At Nelson, the site for the match was a stubble field from which the straw had been cut and baled just before the match, he said. It had ploughed much better than had been expected as the straw had apparently had the effect of keeping the moisture in the ground. It still had not been as good ploughing as that at Blenheim.
