Mr W. V. Osten, formerly divisional engineer with the Post and Telegraph Department, Wellington, has been appointed director of the Singapore Telecommunications Department. Mr Osten, who described his appointment as “a modified •Colombo Plan assistance scheme,” will be attached to the Singapore Government for two years.— (PA.) Messrs C. F. Shadick, W. D. Benjamin, G. Leverstam (nominated by the New Zealand Port Employers’ Association), R. W. Andrews, P. T. Collins and C. Jose (nominated by the Westport Waterside Workers’ Industrial Union of Workers’) have been appointed members of the Westport Port Conciliation Committee. Mr Shadick will be chairman.
Captain W. J. T. Stevens, master of the refrigerated cargo liner Haparangi, will retire from the New Zealand Shipping Company’s service at the end of his ship’s present voyage. He joined the company in 1940 and was appointed to command in 1951. Since then he has commanded five of the company’s cargo ships. He is making his seventeenth successive voyage in the Haparangi, which is due at Auckland from Glasgow this week.
