OMBUDSMAN POST
Establishment By Malaysia (N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, March 15. Malaysia is to become the first Asian country to have an ombudsman to investigate public grievances. The Malaysian Prime Minister (Tunku Abdul Rahman) told reporters after a Cabinet meeting that Malaysia would sk New Zealand to send experts to advise on how to set up the new post. He had asked Deputy Prime Minister (Tun Razak) to broach the matter when he visited New Zealand next month, he said. The Tunku said that one of the jobs of the Malaysian ombudsman would be to protect Government servants who testified against their superiors. “We have got to have a department where people can have access to make their complaints,” he added. India is another Asian country which has been considering the appointment of an ombudsman, but the Malaysian Government is the first to take a firm decision.
