Change In Inter-Club Golf Basis Mooted
A complete change in the set-up of inter-club golf in Canterbury is mooted by the Canterbury Provincial Golf Association.
At its meeting last evening, the management committee referred to the annual meeting of the association the recommendations of the match committee. The match committee, through Mr C. J. Ward, recommended (1) that the three grades Woodward, Blank and Simon Cups—Le abolished and only one championship competition be played; and (2) that this competition be contested on stroke-play, not on a matchplay basis. Elaborating on Mr Ward’s report, Mr E. G. Batstone said it would make the competition similar to the international Eisenhower Cup series; and suggested bonuses—such as extra points for the best score of a day. Mr Batstone, replying to a suggestion that players would miss match-play experience, said It was well known that match-play was a “dead duck” all over th. world. Broad details of the suggestions will be sent to clubs for discussion at the annual meeting. A grant of £2O was made to the North Canterbury inter-club committee, which administers golf in the Templeton Cup area, to assist its finances.
