Sir, —I am dismayed by the N.Z.B.C.’s decision to pronounce certain Maori words in pakeha fashion. Over the last few years the announcers on both radio and television have made a wonderful job of pronouncing Maori words. This harmony of pronouncing each other’s language precisely has brought warmth between our two communities. I have heard comments from Maori folk, such as “By Jove, he can pronounce Maori beautifully," or “Gee, he can speak well for a pakeha.” Now that announcers have become so proficient in their Maori pronunciation, many of us will be saddened when the blunders and harsh wrongly-anglicised sounds of a mutilated tongue again are heard on our radio and television programmes. Why cannot the N.Z.B.C. carry on its excellent pronunciation policy of the last few years? —Yours, etc., HUATA. March 13, 1967.
