N.Z.B.C. Maori
Sir, —If there is any valid objection to Paraparaumu being given its correct Maori pronunciation, then the name of the airport could well be changed. If New York could change Idlewild Airport to Kennedy Airport without apparent difficulty, then a change from Paraparaumu to something simpler (how about “Holykirk’’?) should present few problems. There are many of us who have greatly appreciated the N.Z.B.C.’s excellent example of letting us hear and getting us used to the right pronunciation of Maori names, but we have never had occasion to say so; while the few who find it irritating have obviously made enough fuss to win attention. Rather than tell their announcers to revert to corrupted common usage, the N.Z.B.C. (which has been and should continue to be our leader and guide in the matter of Maori place names) should put its weight behind a change of name for Paraparaumu, which is admittedly, a difficult one. This could be a useful compromise. —Yours, etc..
