AUCKLAND, March 12.

The Governor-General (Sir Bernard Fergussou) returned to Auckland early this afternoon from a Chatham Island visit nearly doubled in hours by bad weather.

Informality prevailed -hroughout all of the community functions arranged for Sir Bernard and Lady Fergusson in Waitangi, the main centre of the Chatham Islands.

During their 43-hour stay the visitors met and spoke with nearly everyone on the island.

Sir Bernard Fergusson is the first Governor-General to visit the Chathams more than once—and a film of his previous tour, in 1963, was shown yesterday in Waitangi. The Vice-Regal party arrived in the Chathams on Friday aboard an Royal New Zealand Air Force Sunderland flying-boat Stiff Winds The island weather switched from sunshine on Friday to stiff winds and rain on Saturday. They stayed at the home of the Resident Commissioner in Waitangi. Among those who attended the functions arranged for the GovernorGeneral were the Chathams' oldest resident, an octogenarian, Mr Tom Lanauze, and Mr James Gregory Hunt member of a pioneer Chathams family, who is one of

some 40 people living on nearby Pitt Island.

Travelling with the ViceRegal party to the Chathams were the Leader of the Opposition (Mr Kirk) and the Commissioner of Police, Mr C. L. Spencer, and Mrs Spencer.
