Canterbury’s Casket Team Thrashed

"The Press" Special Service WHANGAREI. Canterbury, completely outclassed, plunged to a 0-12 defeat at the hands of the powerful Northland side in the Nunnely Casket women’s lawn tennis challenge match at Whangarei at the week-end.

The young Canterbury players never really got into the game against the match-hard-ened Northlanders who won the trophy from Auckland the previous week. The Canterbury juniors. Miss R. Legge and Miss R. Dillon, showed ability so far as stroke making was concerned, but they were far too erratic to trouble the two top Northlanders, Mrs E. Mitchell and Mrs P. Stevens. Miss Legge produced some booming aces and sizzling winners but took two salutory lessons in ball control and court craft. Miss Dillon unleashed a string of fine passing shots in the second set of her match against Mrs Mitchell and went ahead to a 3-0 lead.

But once Mrs Mitchell, an aggressive left-hander, applied

the pressure. Miss Dillon could not sustain the effort.

Canterbury’s best player was the No. 3, Miss S. Field, who showed great determination and set a fine example to her younger team-mates.

She managed to take a set from Miss E. O’Carroll and this was the only one taken by Canterbury.

Neither Miss Field nor the Canterbury captain. Miss C. Andrew, seemed to relish the safety-first tactics adopted by Miss O’Carroll and Miss M. C. McKegg. The Northlanders* lobbing often had the Canterbury players flummoxed. Steady rain fell in Whangarei throughout the week and the matches were transferred from the Whangarei grass courts to hard courts, and were played before a good-sized crowd in overcast weather.
