The Department is concerned with theoretical and applied problems of economic growth and trade. Its primary Interest is in the economic development of the countries of South-east Asia and the Pacific region, especially New Guinea, Malaysia and Indonesia and in Australia’s economic relations with these countries. The Professorial Fellowship is the position which will become vacant through the appointment of Dr. W. M. Corden to the Nuffield Readership in International Economics at Oxford University. Preference will be given to a specialist in the theory of growth or trade, but applications from others interested in the fields of study of the Department, will be considered. The salary of a Professorial Fellow is A 9600 dollars. The salary range of a Senior Fellow is A 7600-8920 dollars, a Fellow A 5620-7600 dollars and that of a Research Fellow A4BOO-6300 dollars. Professorial Fellows and Senior Fellows are entitled to one year’s study leave in every six years’ service and a Fellow one year in every seven years’ service. Senior Fellows and Fellows are appointed for an initial period of five years, thereafter they may be reappointed until retiring age. A Research Fellow is usually appointed for three years with a possible extension to five years. The appointments carry superannuation on the F.S.S.U. pattern with supplementary benefits, reasonable travel expenses and assistance with housing.
