The appointee would have overall responsibility for current and proposed courses in German under the general direction of the Head of the Department. Courses in German were first introduced at this University in 1964. At present German is 1 taught only as a first year subject: as German Studies, which is a one-year course for non- ■ specialists, and as German I - which is the prerequisite fo” more advanced studies. It is proposed to introduce a second--5 year course, German 11, in the near future, to be followed at an early date by German 111, which would then enable stu- • dents to major in German at this University. The Department of Modern 1 Languages teaches French and Japanese in addition to German. 1 The present establishment consists of one professor (and , head of department) and two ’ lecturers for French, one lec- ; turer for German and one senior lecturer for Japanese. THE UNIVERSITY OF SYDNEY INVITES applications for the position of; LECTURER/SENIOR LECTURER IN ANTHROPOLOGY THE Department ,of Anthropology provides undergraduate courses and post-graduate training in social anthropology, linguistics and Pacific pre-history. Current research interests of members of the Department include problems of general sociological interest with special reference to modern industrial societies and the peoples of South-east Asia (including Indonesia), the islands of the Western Pacific and aboriginal Australia. Candidates should have a general knowledge of current theoretical issues in social anthropolgy and have carried out research in the field. Salary for a Lecturer is within the range $4BOO x 220—6340 per annum, and for a Senior Lecturer within the range $6600 x 200—7600 per annum. The successful appointee will be required to participate with others in the wheat varietal improvement programme now in progress and to carry out research in this field.
