Threw Radios Overboard

AUCKLAND, February 27
A Customs officer leapt into the harbour to retrieve a parcel containing transistor radios and tobacco thrown from the ship Waimate the Auckland Magistrate’s Court was told today.
Before Mr E. F. Rothwell, S.M., John Kelleher, a motor attendant, pleaded guilty to a charge of smuggling the
property, worth £55, into the country. He was convicted and fined £l5.
Mr Palmer, prosecuting for the Collector of Customs, said that about 2.30 p.m. on Friday two Customs officers on the Waimate saw Kelleher climbing out of the engineroom carrying a parcel. When challenged he climbed to the deck and threw the parcel into the harbour.
An officer leapt in and recovered it. It contained five transistor radios and two lb of tobacco.
Honour for Chancellor.— The Canterbury University Council congratulated the Chancellor (the Rt. Rev. A. K. Warren) on the award of the C.M.G. in the New Year Honours.
