Minister Moves Against Tipping

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON, February 26.

“I would not like to see this 10 per cent charge started in New Zealand,” said the Minister of Tourism (Mr Muldoon) commenting on the service charge proposed at the new Intercontinental Hotel in Auckland.

Mr Muldoon asked the Government directors of the company owning the hotel to try

to stop the 10 per cent surcharge being introduced. “This is essentially a matter for the operating company but I understand that the quoted price, including a 10 per cent service charge, was a tentative one only. I have asked the Government directors to raise the matter,” said Mr Muldoon.

The hotel recently told Australian travel agencies that a 10 per cent service charge would be added to all tariffs. The Minister believed that New Zealand's present system on general non-tipping was in the interests of the country and its tourist industry. Some New Zealand tourist publicity abroad, particularly in the United States emphasised this point.
