Baby’s Life Saved By Quick Action
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, February 27. Anthony Buchanan, aged 2, of Tilley road, Paekakariki, who was rushed from his home to Wellington Hospital on Saturday with his lungs and windpipe blocked with stones, was in fair condition today.
The Wellington free ambulance, Paekakariki volunteer fire brigade, and Government and city traffic authorities combined in an emergency effort which saved the boy’s life.
When he was found unconscious about 10.30 a.m. urgent calls from a Paekakariki doctor had the fire brigade’s mechanical resuscitator available in minutes and an ambulance was sent north from the motorway. Firemen, posted at key intersections, directed the ambulance to the Buchanan home.
On the return to Wellington the ambulance officer radioed for reserve oxygen to be taken to the northern end of the motorway. Government traffic officers
held the lights open for the ambulance at the foot of the Ngauranga Gorge, and in the city traffic men controlled busy intersections to give a clear run.
At Wellington Hospital a surgical team had been alerted and was standing by.
