Overcome By Gas Fumes
(N.Z. Press Association) NAPIER, Feb. 27. A family of six was rushed to the Napier Hospital after they escaped from their gasfilled home in Georges drive, Napier, this morning. Three children <rf Mr Brian Thomas Keogh, of 221 Georges drive, collapsed in the bedrooms and hallway of the two-storeyed house after being overcome by gas fumes from a leaking pipe. The near tragedy was traced back to the early afternoon when Mr Keogh was replacing the floor in the laundry as part of his redocoration of the house. He removed an unsightly gas pipe, thinking the gas had been disconnected from the section, but the gas worked its way through the house. About midnight, Virginia, aged 13, noticed her sister, Christine, aged 6, tossing in her bed and “obviously having difficulty getting her breath.” “She looked as though she was having convulsions and ‘keeled’ over,” said Mr Keogh. The other sister also collapsed. The family was expected to be discharged from hospital today.
Mr Lake’s Death.—Regret at the death of Mr H. R. Lake, Minister of Finance, a Canterbury graduate, and a former lecturer in accountancy, was recorded by the Canterbury ■University Council yesterday.
