School Creche For three weeks the Christchurch Girls’ High School has had a “school creche,” the principal, Miss P. M. Robinson, told the monthly meeting of the board of governors last night. The creche was because a relieving teacher had to bring her one-year-old son with her to the school. He was catered for satisfactorily as there was a cot in the home science section, and girls doing practical work took turns at taking him on “educational tours” of the school, Miss Robinson said. All was now back to normal with the regular teacher back on duty. Efforts Rewarded As a reward for raising funds for the school last year, 30 boys from Form V at Christchurch Boys’ High School spent four days at Kidson Hut near Arthur’s Pass last week. Under the master in charge (Mr F. N. Wilson) the boys tramped and explored the area. The school huts can accommodate up to 40 at a time, and have been let to other secondary schools. 15,000 Dollars The United States Air Force office of scientific research has awarded a contract of 15,000 dollars over two years to Professor L. F. Phillips for research in the chemistry department of the University of Canterbury on gas reactions. Cooler Day Christchurch weather was a little cooler yesterday, with a maximum temperature of 72 degrees recorded at the weather office at Harewood between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. The same temperature—72 degrees—was recorded in the Botanic Gardens at 3 p.m. Skies were partly cloudy all day and a light to moderate north-east wind blew. At 6 a.m. at Harewood the temperature was 55 degrees and had risen to 65 degrees by 9 a.m. Between noon and 4 p.m. the temperature remained just over 70 degrees. At 4 p.m. it had fallen to 67 degrees. Complaint The nurse’s room at the community centre appeared to have been used for sleeping quarters, said the Lyttelton sub-centre of the St. John Ambulance Brigade, in a letter to the Lyttelton Borough Council last night. The letter claimed that blankets and paillasses from civil defence stocks had been used, light fittings damaged and a set of books removed. The complaint was referred to the centre management committee.
