McLELLAND’S BUSH

Forest And Bird Society Visit About 150 members of the Canterbury branch of the Royal Forest and Bird Protection Society visited the 87acre McLelland’s Bush domain on Saturday. Miss R. Mason, of the D.5.1.R., was the guest botanist and lecturer. On the way members visited Mr and Mrs Petrie’s property at Lyndhurst where a great deal of hard work had transformed a disused shingle pit into an attractive garden. McLelland’s Bush, a valuable remnant of black beech foothill forest, is in an open, south-facing valley at the southern end of the Mount Hutt range. It was surveyed as a reserve in 1906 and has been known as Pudding Hill domain and Awa Awa Rata domain. Members were pleased to see an encouraging' regneration of native plants and it was considered that the area was reasonably free from deer although extensive opossum damage was evident Considerable bird life was seen. n?rticularly near the outskirts of the forest
