THE ROAD ACROSS THE DAM at the Benmore hydroelectric power station. The lake formed behind the dam extends 18 miles up the Waitaki river and 12 miles up the Ahuriri river. The maximum depth is 315ft and the length of shoreline 72 miles. The spillway is at the end of the dam. The intake gates to the penstocks are out of the picture on the right.
