Wool Firms At Napier

<N.Z. Pres, Association)' •, NAPIER, Feb. 24. J Compared with the < rates ruling at the , Auckland sale on Feb- J ruary 17, the market , at today’s Napier wool j sale was very firm for i all descriptions. ' i Total passings were about 1 39 per cent of which 37 per 1 cent was passed to the Wool Commission. , Chief competition came s from the Continent with sup- | port coming from American t

and Japanese interests with the local mills supporting the market for types suitable for their requirements. The offering comprised 29,870 bales of greasy wool drawn from Taupo, Talhape, all Hawke’s Bay and Poverty Bay districts and consisted mainly of ewe fleece and early shorn with the usual proportion of oddments. A larger proportion of lambs’ wool was on offer at this sale. Although a very useful proportion of topmaking wools sound in staple and showing good colour was available, the February offering, with

the exception of lambs’ wool, was not up to style of the wool sold at the February sale last season and was very similar in style to the wool on offer at the recent January sale. Late spring and early summer rains had shown their effect on oddments in particular which were inclined to be somewhat water stained, with the fleece wool showing some cottiness and tenderness.

Lambs’ wool opened up well showing in the main quite good colour without the normal seed content specially in lines received from the Poverty Bay area. The commission operated freely on all crossbred descriptions. The official range of prices
