GOOD TEAM DISCIPLINE North Canterbury Wins Hawke Cup

“The Press” Special Service

PALMERSTON NORTH.

North Canterbury outplayed Manawatu throughout its three-day match to finish a clear winner by 82 runs on the first innings and win the Hawke Cup.

Rigid discipline, and determination, were noticeable with this team, and the captain, A. Wright, led magnificently by personal example.

When North Canterbury was dismissed in its second innings yesterday afternoon, Manawatu had no chance of making the runs wanted for an outright win. The last man out was A. Wright who made 75.

North Canterbury, out for 333, left Manawatu the impossible task of making 416 runs to win in 165 minutes. Not that North Canterbury is being blamed for batting on. When a team wins a trophy, its first consideration is to hold on to it. Manawatu lost the match in the field. A conservative estimate put the number of dropped catches in North Canterbury’s second innings at 12— some of them in the very easy class. Wright was dropped at least twice, one an incredibly easy chance to G.

Haddon at second slip early yesterday when Manawatu still had a chance. Manawatu did not deserve to win the match with such fielding, and its batting, with few exceptions, was almost as bad. North Canterbury bowled well—very well at times, and the only Manawatu batsman to appear at ease was the Central Districts player, D. McLeod, who hit a delightful 100 in 148 minutes in Manawatu’s second innings of 159 for seven wickets. The Hawke Cup has returned to the South Island, and North Canterbury will have to defend a challenge from Nelson before the end of the season. If North Canterbury plays as well as it did against Manawatu, the team should win again.
