Emus Face A Difficult Task

On a dusty Bagley Oval wicket that should help spin bowling, the Northern New South Wales colts (Emus) cricket team today faces the task of scoring 381 runs in 390 minutes to beat the Canterbury colts. Dismissing the Emus for 153 to take a first-innings lead of 78 runs, Canterbury yesterday scored 302 in its second innings.

D. W. Stead, who scored the second Canterbury century of the match, shared with R. W. Anderson a third wicket partnership of 167 runs in 130 minutes. The Emus -first Innings continued for an hour in the morn-

ing. After D. R. Hadlee claimed the fifth lbw victim of the innings with a ball that failed to rise, D. Thrift and R, Newell showed in a ninth wicket part-

nership of 34 that the dangers of playing back had been heeded. The absence of lift from a wicket hastily hewn from the outfield was weW exploited in several short spells by D. R. Trist. The left-arm opening bowler, R. Douglas, momentarily brought the Emus back into the game when in Canterbury’s second innings he trapped P. Wall in front with his first ball and found a gap between the bat and pad of I. M. Walter three overs later. Stead's runs were made in 160 minutes and included 10 fours. His only error, apart from the care-free drive that ended his innings was converted to a chance by the speed of the wicket-keeper, C. Matterson, who flung himself forward to place a glove under a ball that Stead popped up in a defensive stroke. The catch was dropped and Stead, then on 96,

reached his hundred with a pulled four. Anderson had a wider range of * strokes and they carried more power. His innings in-

eluded eight fours and a six. Canterbury, progressing from 24 for two to 199 for four, led by 277 when Anderson touched one to Matterson. The requirement then was quick runs, but Gearry was strangely , quiet after his first-innings century. Canterbury’s position, sound as it is, should have been even stronger. Gearry contributed 41 of the 111 runs added while he was at the wicket, and he was there for 134 minutes.
