Three Records Broken

The surprise competitor of the 1967 Canterbury swimming championships, Bryce Ward (Wharenui), broke two butterfly records and lost a third through disqualification during the fourth session of the centre’s title meeting in the Centennial Pool last night.

Already winner of the boys’ harbour swim and the junior 440yds freestyle, Ward took the boys’ 110yds butterfly title last night in a time which clipped l.lsec from the

Canterbury senior and junior record.

In achieving this, he showed that he had quickly learnt a lesson in correct butterfly stroking, for earlier in the evening he had smashed the men’s 220 yd record by 15sec, only to be disqualified for an incorrect arm movement as he went into his turns.

The men’s 220 yd event resulted in a hollow victory for the title-holders, O. P. Noonan (Spreydon), who, without any training behind him, loped home behind Ward and R. J. Hay (Elmwood), both of whom finished inside Noonan’s centre record. But Hay, too, was disqualified for using a freestyle kick —and the title went to Noonan.

The fourth session of the championships was also notable for an excellent 446 yd freestyle swim by A. B. Kindred (Wharenui), who cut 2.3 sec from the Canterbury men’s record in winning his third title. Kindred’s split times were 66.55ec, 70.5 sec, 72sec and 70.1 sec.

There was an upset at the start of the race when M. Johnston (Jellie Park) broke and the entire field started. The starter (Mr R. W. H. Luscombe) tried to fire a second shot but the gun jammed and officials had to run along the poolside to snare the swimmers with the flagged rope. N. Williams, however, escaped the round-up and 23sec had elapsed before he was brought back to the start.

Eleven new records were set last night and one was equalled. With two sessions left, the aggregate of records broken is 31, with two equalled. Brent Lewis (Spreydon) set three new marks last night and his brother, Mark, equalled one and contributed to one of the pool’s rare dead-heats. In the under-14 boys’ 110 yd butterfly, Mark Lewis produced a punishing finishing burst to touch simultaneously with John Baigent. Other record breakers were Angela Bunt (Wharenui), Susan Hunter (Spreydon), Mark Trembath (Jellie Park), Angela Lewis (Spfeydon) and the Wharenui boys’ under-12 freestyle relay team. West Coast swimmers had a successful night, with John Newton (under-13 freestyle) and Neville Roberts (under-14 and Anne Mumm (under-12 freestyle) taking a second place. Two excellent backstroke efforts were produced by the Sockburn Park swimmers, D. S. Bowman and Miss J. Wright, while Shona Hallam (Sockburn Park) and Maureen Darch (Spreydon) confirmed their promise in under-14 girls’ freestyle. Abbreviations used in the results are:—B., Beckenham; C., Christchurch; C.L., Christchurch Ladies; E., Elmwood: J.P., Jellie Park; Nth.B., North Beach: R..
