Simpson And Lawry In Stand

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright* DURBAN. R. Simpson and W. Lawry headed a sterling fight-back by Australia in the third test against South Africa at Kingsmead yesterday.

Trailing by 153 runs on the first innings, the Australians were forced to follow on. Simpson and Lawry batted unconquered through the session before lunch and their stand of 94 took a large slice off the Australian first innings deficit.

The two had played chancelessly and the Springbok pace bowlers could make no impression on the easy paced pitch. Only the off-spinner D. Pithey, who bowled six maidens in eight overs, kept the Australians in check.

The Springbok bowler, P. Trimborn, bowled only three overs before he retired with a strained groin. The South African captain, P. van der Merwe, tried seven bowlers, but the breakthrough did not come until after lunch. T. Lance, the Transvaal medium fast bowler, broke the stand when he drew Lawry forward with a ball that moved away off the seam and caught the outside edge of the Australian’s bat. Lindsay held the catch behind the wicket. Lawry had batted 148 minutes for his stubborn 34.

Redpath joined Simpson and it was not long before the Australians had 100 on the board.

At tea Simpson had scored 77, Redpath 17, and the Australians were one for 134.
