Under-Age Swimmers Break 7 Records

The boom in under-age swimming continued at the third session of the Canterbury championships in the Centennial Pool last night when the younger competitors accounted for seven of the eight records which were broken.

The meeting has produced 20 new marks so far—and all but two of them have been set by under - age swimmers.

Last night Catherine Whiting (Wharenui) took her total for the championships to five when she established new figures for 55yds butterfly and 55yds freestyle in the under--13 giris’ section. Her times Of 31sec for freestyle and 34.7 sec for butterfly were exceptional efforts for a 12-year-old.

Excitement reached a high pitch during the junior boys’ 440 yd freestyle, in which B. Ward (Wharenui) beat the favourite, B. M. Mustchin (Sockburn Park) after a gripi ping duel. Mustchin set a stiff I pace, but Ward clung to him resolutely. He seized the lead from Mustchin 70yds from the end and held on with powerful strokes to win by a yard. Ward, who had won the boys’ harbour swim the previous day, qualified for the national championships with his time of 4min 52.75ec. Close To Record

A. B. Kindred (Wharenui), who is set for a clean sweep in the men’s freestyle events, swam his fastest 220yds in winning the title from a determined N. Williams (Wharenui), last year’s champion. Kindred’s time of 2min 12.8 sec was only half a second outside W. G. Andrew’s centre record, set four years ago. Williams, who was poorly placed in the early stages, finished strongly to beat the national qualifying time.

The stylish Spreydon swimmer, J. C. Edmonds, proved a worthy successor to W. P. Brown as men’s breaststroke champion when he won the 220 yd event in the good time of 2min S3.lsec. The juniors, Max King and Ron Wilson, gave him spirited competition for threequarters of the race, but Edmonds’s sustained pressure on the field in the last length told on his younger rivals. The only record-breaker In

either senior or junior ranks was David Bowman (Sockburn Park), who bettered his own boys' 110 yd backstroke mark and was only o.6sec outside the men’s record. It was Bowman’s second backstroke record of the meeting. Brent Lewis (under-11 550yds backstroke) and his sister, Angela Lewis (under-10 110 yd freestyle) both set new records and their brother, Mark, rounded off a successful night’s swimming for the family by winning two titles in the under-13 boys’ section.

South Canterbury swimmers made their presence felt by capturing three titles. Lesley Smith surprised Canterbury’s leading girl breaststroke swimmers by winning the junior 110 yd event handsomely, while Karen Crawford (under-14 220 yd breaststroke) and Paul Cleland (under-14 110yds freestyle) also gained clear-cut wins. Girls from the Wharenui club enjoyed a successful night's swimming. Jaynie Parkhouse (under-11 55yd freestyle) and Helen Sexton (underl2 55yd butterfly), broke individual records and later combined with Kay Nielson and Angela Bunt to take B.ssec from the under-12 girls' 220yds freestyle relay record.
