BOILER FAILS
! Pa Makes I Appeal I (N.Z. Press Association) WANGANUI, Jan. 23. ! A boiler broke down at the .crowded Ratana pa today. With nearly 3000 visitors from all over New Zealand ■ hungry for breakfast, the old ‘boiler burnt through its I tubes, causing pump failure. With hot water “off,” a I gloom was cast over the annual Ratana hui celebrating I the birth of the founder of the Ratana Church, Mr TaIhupotiki Wiremu Ratana. ] An urgent call was made to pas up the Wanganui river for any cooking equipment tthey could muster, particularly coppers to heat food and water over open fires. The response was immediate and before lunch time coppers had arrived from as far as Ohakune. However, hundreds more visitors surged to the pa today to bring the population to 6500, and engineers hoped to have the boiler in working order again by early tomorrow.
The Ratana Church synod continued its annual meeting today. The highlight of celebrations on Wednesday wiU be the arrival of Queen Ta Ata I Rang! Kaahu, head of the King movement in the Waikato.
