50 Years As A Barber
"The Press" Special Service AUCKLAND, Jan. 15. There are few men in Hamilton who have not been under the scissors of Mr E. A. Scott, who has celebrated his fiftieth year as a hairdresser. Mr Scott began his apprenticeship in Timaru with Mr E. Firkin. Now Mr H. Firkin, a great-nephew of the Timaru hairdresser, has joined a three-man partnership in the saloon, which until recently was run by Mr L. Sarney. The third partner is a Scot, Mr P. Mclntyre, who has been in New Zealand for 17 years but has not yet lost his habit of singing soft Scottish melodies to his customers. Mr Scott, who was appren-
ticed for five years at 12s 6d a week, said he “had the full treatment barbering and all.” When a son of Mr E. Firkin went to Australia and returned as an accomplished cutter of women’s hair, Mr Scott learnt the art from him. He has, in Hamilton, quite a clientele of women customers who have been having their hair cut by Mr Scott for many years.
In the new partnership Mr Scott and Mr Mclntyre continue with the “short back and sides” while Mr Firkin, accomplished in the more modern requirements of men’s hairdressing, looks after the appointment customers.
