Stallions From U.S.

Three United States trotting stallions, owned by Mr Martin Tananbaum, president of Yonkers Raceway, New York, will stand at studs in New Zealand. Two of the standardbred stallions, Emory Hanover and Tartan Hanover, will arrive in Wellington by sea on January 12. They have been six months in quarantine in England. The third horse, Hondo Hanover, Is still in quarantine and will arrive in New Zealand later. The stallions will go

first to Peterson Lodge, the trotting establishment of Mr C. L. Rhodes. Mr Rhodes said that the horses would probably stand at South Island studs. The three stallions had only recently completed their racing careers, and all had done well in America. Because Mr Tananbaum had agreed to lease the stallions, the project would cost New Zealand no dollars. Some of the studmasters to whom the horses would be leased would probably not have

been able to purchase them because of the cost. Mr Rhodes said that in the last 18 months or so close to two million dollars had been earned by sale of New Zealand pacing and trotting horses to the United States. If the three leased stallions proved good sires, their progeny might earn more dollars. He expected that the stallions would meet steady booking because standardbred sires in New Zealand were well booked.
