Professor Cousins To Head Cawthron Institute

NELSON, Dec. 20. The Cawthron Institute Trust Board has appointed Professor F. B. Cousins to succeed Dr. C. R. Barnicoat as director of the Cawthron Institute. Dr. Barnicoat reaches retiring age in September.

Professor Cousins, aged 40, is head of the Biochemical Research Union, Dental School, University of Otago. He is married with four children. He attended Palm-

where he graduated MSc. with first class honours and obtained his PhD. in 1954. He has worked in Government and university and has had some experience in industry. After a year of study in the United States in 1962 under Professor W. F. Neuman, an internationally recognised figure in the field of calcium and phosphorus metabolism, Professor Cousins was invited to establish and lead the Biochemical Research Unit at the Dental School. The unit’s work has centred on calcium and magnesium and has given Professor Cousins contact with the farming community in Otago.

He is president of the Otago University Graduates' Association, honorary vicepresident of the Institute of Science Technicians, and coopted member of the Otago Polytechnic Council and vicecommodore of the University of Otago Yacht Club.

He will take up his appointment late next year.

Food for Tonga.—The Norwegian freighter Elin Haven, which is due at Auckland tomorrow, is bringing 286 tons of food for Tonga. It was supplied by a Catholic relief organisation in New York, and will be discharged at Auckland to be reshipped to Tonga in the Matua and Tofua.—(PA.)
