Saw Killer Whales Attack Blackfish

(.Vetv Zealand Press Assoctattont

GISBORNE, December 5

Members of the Gisborne Underwater Club saw six killer whales attack a group of blackfish at Flat Rock, Mahia, on Sunday.

Shortly before about 15 members of the club were due to enter the water, a large fin was seen, standing four feet out of the water. This was recognised as a killer whale. Six killer whales were

Icounted and each appeared to ibe from 20 to 25 feet long. I The club members also saw iabout 20 blackfish, a small itype of whale about 12 feet I long. I The killers seemed to be iherding the blackfish into the bay.

The members watched from not more than six yards away as two killer whales cornered a bl.-.ckfish by what appeared to be cunning teamwork. The biggest snapped the blackfish by the tail and with monstrous bites devoured it in two or three minutes.

Killing was going on all over the bay. One and a half hours later the club members took to the water when it was clear.
