OMISSION OF WALKER
Parochialism Claimed
(N.Z. Press Association)
AUCKLAND.
The Auckland champion, L. Walker, was a victim of parochialism In missing selection in the New Zealand crosscountry team to compete in Wales next March, said Walker’s coach. Mr A. Jelley, yesterday. “Had he lived in any other province, except Auckland, I’ll guarantee he would have made that team,” Mr Jelley said.
“Walker won the Auckland title, beating the national champion, R. Maddaford, finished third in the national event, and seventh in the trial on Saturday,” he said. “Yet he is not among the New Zealand team of nine named to contest the event in Wales.”
Mr Jelley said he would write to the management committee of the National Athletic Association protesting at Walker’s omission. In addition to Walker, Mr Jelley coaches the Commonwealth Games mile bronze medallist I. S. Studd, and the prominent marathon runner, P. Sale.
