RYANS PLANS
To Run 3, 6 Miles
(N.Z. Press Association) HAMILTON. The 24-year-old Tokoroa runner, M. Ryan, who won the recent Japanese marathon at Fukuoka, will concentrate on three and six-mile track events this season. In addition, he will train for the world cross-country championships in Wales next March.
Ryan has been included in the New Zealand cross-coun-try team even though he could not participate in tihe trials at Wellington on Saturday. Ryan, who returned home yesterday, said he had been invited to compete in the Japanese marathon again next year. There was also a possibility of him receiving an invitation to compete in the famed Boston event in April. Ryan said that more than 50,000 spectators watched the marathon at Fukuoka. He had heard before the race that some of the Japanese thought he was a threat because of his speed. “But no-one expected me to win,” he added.
