KRISHNAN CLINCHES TIE INDIA THROUGH TO DAVIS CUP FINAL

CALCUTTA.
India beat Brazil, by three matches to two, at Calcutta yesterday to qualify to meet Australia, the holders, in the challenge round of the Davis Cup in Melbourne on December 26, 27 and 28.
Krishnan, India’s 29-year-old captain, clinched the victory by beating the Brazilian left-hander, T. Koch, in the final singles, 3-6, 6-4, 10-12, 7-5.
The match had been halted the previous evening through failing light with Koch leading by two sets to one. It is the first time that India has reached the challenge round in the Davis Cup competition.
This year, it won the eastern zone and then beat West Germany, the European zone winner, to qualify to meet Brazil in the inter-zone final. The Barzilians played
through group A of the European zone and then gained a shock win over the United States, the American zone champions. After India had led Brazil, 2-1, E. Mendarino put Brazil back into the contest on Monday by beating J. Mukherjea, 9-7, 3-6, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, in a match which lasted 3} hours.
