Meeting Called On Shipping Control

(Neu! Zealand Press Association)

DUNEDIN, December 6.

A public meeting will be held on Thursday in Dunedin to discuss the control of New Zealand’s overseas shipping services.

This was decided tonight at a meeting of the Otago Trades Council, which was attended by seamen delegates who have been involved in the Waihemo sit-in. The council’s secretary, Mr W. C. McDonnell, said: “The council congratulated the crew of the Waihemo on drawing public attention in such a dramatic way to the need

for the establishment of a State-owned shipping line. “The council gives every support to moves to break the overseas monopoly of our shipping links with other countries.”

Thursday night’s meeting will be addressed by seamen’s representatives and others concerned with the shipping industry.
