ASSURANCE TO THANT
(N.Z. Press Association) • WELLINGTON, December 5. The Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) today assured the United Nations SecretaryGeneral, U Thant, of the continued warm support of New Zealand in the tasks that lie ahead. Mr Holyoake sent the following message to U Thant on his acceptance of a second term as Secretary-General:— “On behalf of the Government and people of New Zealand I wish to express my deep sense of gratification at your decision to remain as Secretary-General of the United Nations for a further term.
“I am conscious that this has been a most difficult decision for you to make and that the burden of your great office is a heavy one. Nevertheless. 1 am sure that with the unanimous support of member states you will be able further to serve the United Nations with the same rare distinction and high integrity which you have shown throughout the past five years. “Your tireless efforts for peace have been and will be an example to all men, and I wish to assure you of the continued warm support of New Zealand in this and the other difficult tasks that lie ahead.”
