Musicians Get Pay Increases

A weekly increase of £l, with proportionate minimums for other classes of performances in other clauses, has been granted to New Zealand musicians in a Court of Arbitration award, effective from November 29.

Musicians employed at general theatrical performances will be paid £l6 7s 6d a week for six performances and for six performances in less than a week. Performances in excess of six shall be paid for on a pro rata basis of the weekly rate prescribed and musicians employed on two consecutive night performances on one day will be paid 5s 7d meal money. Additional performances will be worth 16s 6d an hour.

The rate for performers on tour has been altered. They will now be paid a daily allowance of £2 for each day they are required to be absent from their home town.

For time spent rehearsing for any engagement, an hourly rate of 10s lOd will be paid for the first four hours, increasing to 15s 3d after that. Performers engaged in cafes, tearooms and hotels between 9 a.m. and 10.30 p.m. shall be paid a minimum rate of 18s an hour with a minimum engagement of two hours.

Artists engaged in cafes and tearooms shall be paid £1 4s 6d per hour for working on Sundays. Musicians engaged to play before midnight with an orchestra shall be paid not less than 17s per hour with a minimum engagement time of three hours. For after-midnight performances; payment shall not be less than £1 5s 6d an hour.

A musician employed by a dancing instructor or music teacher shall be paid at the rate of 15s an hour with a minimum payment of £1 2s 6d for the time worked at any one time.

Musicians employed making records and transcriptions of sound tracks shall be paid £4 0s 6d for up to seven minutes of music within a recording session of two hours, and for up to 15 minutes of music, with a recording session of not more than three hours—including rehearsals—the musician shall be paid not less than £6.

For a recording session of up to three hours, in which not more than 30 minutes of music is recorded, each musician shall be paid not less than £6 15s 6d. For music in excess of this time the wage shall be not less than £2 5s for each additional three minutes of music or part thereof for which the session may be extended by up to one hour. Where an extra retake is necessary, within five days of a recording session, a session consisting of one and a half hours at which no more than three and a half minutes of

music may be recorded, shall be permissible and each musician shall be paid not less than £2 10s.

For each session consisting of one hour or less, during which time no more than one jingle or spot announcement can be made, each musician will be paid not less than £2 10s. For each additional jingle, made within the session, an additional fee of £1 5s 3d shall be paid and the session may be extended by 30 minutes. For television rehearsals, musicians shall be paid £1 3s 6d an hour and for screening, while being heard and seen, £2 10s will be paid for each 30-minute period. For each additional 15 minutes, £1 3s 6d will be paid to each musician. For music heard only, £2 5s for each musician will be paid for up to 30 minutes of music.

For races and ship or boat excursions, rates ranging from £2 Ils to £3 15s, depending on the hours and time of day, will be paid to musicians, and bandleaders will receive at least £1 14s 6d extra. The award will remain in force until May 29, 1968.
