“Reserves Less Than Vietnam’
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, November 24. The Labour candidate for Tamaki, Mr K. Ryan, last night accused the National Party of using the Vietnam issue as a “blind.” He said National leaders had avoided the main issue. New Zealand's economic situation.
“This question of Vietnam has only been used to blind people to the tragedy of our present economic situation,” he said. “The economy of this country is at a very low ebb indeed. In fact, we have one of the lowest reserves in the world. It is only one-quarter of the reserves held by South Vietnam, yet we are giving them aid today.”
