PORTABLE TOWERS
Proposal For
Beach Patrols Portable towers, suitable for beach patrols, may soon be seen on Christchurch beaches if a plan suggested by the Sumner Surf Life-sav-ing Club is accepted by the Canterbury association. The club has produced a plan for a mobile and fully equipped tower. This was in answer to the association’s request for more mobile and improved methods of patrolling the beaches. The tower could be moved along the beach, closer to the water’s edge. The club was requested to furnish more information on costs and other matters pertaining to the plan.
An association subcommittee is to investigate the condition of portable reels that have been lent by the association to other organisations. Members of the association claimed that reels on at least one outlying beach were not suitable for use.
The following Canterbury officials were appointed by the New Zealand council to act at the national championships at Warrington (Otago) in February:— Referee, Mr S. D. Tarrant; assistant marshals. Messrs J. Moore and L. J. Tointon; starter, Mr G. Chammen; announcer, Mr A. N. Staples; computing stewards, Messrs M. Restall and J. Groom; ballot referee, Mr S. B. Mason, chief timekeeper, Mr R. K Phillips.
