STATEMENT ON VIETNAM
‘Timing Was
Incidental’
The statement on the withdrawal of troops from Vietnam, issued in May, was made by the Joint Council of Labour, which represented both the Federation of Labour and the Labour Party, and that it was issued during the federation’s conference was incidental, the president of the Canterbury Glass Workers’ Union, Mr S. G. Isherwood, says in a letter to “The Press.”
Mr Isherwood says that the statement could have been issued at any time, as it was neither an F.O.L. nor a Labour Party policy statement until endorsed by either or both.
Mr Holyoake’s assertion that Mr Kirk and Dr. Finlay were “rudely put in their places by the militant unionists who dominated the conference,” showed the lack of appreciation of democracy held by him and his party, Mr Isherwood says.
