CONFERENCE SOUGHT

Schools’ Staff Shortage

(N.Z. Press Association)

AUCKLAND, Nov

The Auckland region of the Post-Primary Teachers’ Association is trying to convene a special national conference of the association with the aim of asking the Government for a greater effort to overcome the staffing shortage. The Auckland region's bid comes shortly before Mr C. C. Watts, a senior inspector with the Education Department in Wellington, sets out to lead a six-months’ recruiting drive for 100 graduate secondary school teachers in Britain.

In a statement the region said it recently held its largest meeting since the staffing crisis of 1961. It was attended by more than 200 delegates representing more than 1000 Auckland secondary school teachers.

The reason for the meeting was the “deep concern about the alarming fall in recruitment at a time when there is already a chronic shortage in some areas on out-moded staffing ratios.”
