Man On Charge Of Rape

A 19-year-old girl complaintant, giving evidence on a charge of rape against Patrick William Hammond, a 40-year-old workman, whose trial began in the Supreme Court late yesterday morning, told defence counsel that she had failed to appear when depositions were to be taken because she was “scared of all this.”

The girl was the first of 10 Crown witnesses in the case, which will continue before Mr Justice Macarthur today, when the defence will be put. Hammond, defended by Mr L. G. Holder, has pleaded not guilty on the charge that he raped the girl in a house at Middleton, on the night of September 12.
