CANCER UNIT

Installation Delayed

The new linear accelerator deep-ray cancer treatment unit would be delivered in February of next year, it was reported at yesterday’s meeting of the North Canterbury Hospital Board. But the building would not be ready for at least another year, said the works committee’s report. The manufacturers had been asked to indicate whether the accelerator might be stored, or whether delivery could be delayed.

The committee said authority to prepare working drawings for radiotherapy department alterations was awaited. The Health Department had raised several questions on ventilation, ceiling height and cost, and a reply had been sent indicating reasons for additional costs, and agreeing that the ceiling height could be reduced to 9ft.
