AVAILABLE TO PUBLIC

West Melton Observatory The Canterbury Astronomical Society would use the new R. F. Joyce Memorial Observatory at West Melton to give the public an opportunity to learn something about astronomy and how an observatory worked, said Mr F. P. Andrews, the president of the Canterbury Astronomical Society, at the forty-fourth annual meeting of the Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand in Christchurch. The observatory, on Bells road, was officially opened by Mr A. S. Westland, a senior member of both societies. Both societies own the observatory. Also, the observatory would be used by the Canterbury society for its part in the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory's satellite tracking programme, “Moonwatch,” and work would be done on variable stars and planetary and lunar observations, said Mr Andrews. It was hoped eventually to obtain equipment that would enable the society to help with the Mount John Observatory's projects and also with the society’s own projects. A general watch would be kept on comets and any other items of general astronomical Interest, said Mr Andrews.
