Conditions Set For “Mr Whippy” At Kaiapoi

The Kaiapoi Borough Council on Monday evening approved the issue of a mobile shop licence to Soft Serve Products, Ltd. to run a “Mr Whippy” van. but made the licence conditional on a prohibition of sales on the Main North road, or on the borough section of Beach road. Other conditions, approved by the council on the recommendation of its by-laws committee, were that no business be done within 200 yards of shops doing similar business or within 150 ft of any intersection or curve where visibility might be reduced.

It was also agreed that selling should be restricted to daylight hours, from the kerbside or off the road where possible, and that there should be no nuisance, annoyance or danger to the public. Complaint—On a complaint from 12 residents about a dog owned by an Ohoka road man, the council decided to write to him, asking that more attention be paid to restraining the dog. Tuhoe. The motor-vessel Tuhoe was to have gone to Lyttelton for slipping for inspection by a prospective buyer, but the deal had fallen through, it was reported. The council decided, in reply to a request from C. Morgan Williams and Son, Ltd., that it would not give an assurance that the Tuhoe's Kaiapoi berth would be retained if she left the port. Side Channels. People were still putting timber down for channel crossings, and one set of home-made crossings, which did not comply, had twice been removed, reported the foreman (Mr G. Gilbert). Kairaki.—lt was decided to send circulars to those on the Kairaki water supply, asking if they would pay up to £5 a year for an improved supply. Problems had arisen, it was said, and the alternative was to let people make their own arrangements, and abandon the existing system. Underground.—The council approved underground wiring for the Meadow street area, and decided to send circulars to the 32 section-owners concerned asking for a contribution of £2O each. The total cost was estimated at £2557, less £640 from the consumers. Power Bills.—The electricity committee reported that although it did not favour a change now to quarterly meter readings, it had noted the question for review after the change to decimal currency and tariff adjustments. New Baths.—Plans for financing a new pool for the Kaiapoi Swimming Club were approved. The council would find £2500 in two annual grants of £1250, and the club and a Golden Kiwi grant will provide £2500 each. The pool would be open for the 196869 season. Hazard.—Cr. W. E. Bell said there should be more frequent traffic patrols at busy times at the Charles streetpost office corner, where there was an accident recently.
