WEIGHING CATTLE
Proposal Is Deferred
North Canterbury Federated Farmers are to take no further steps meantime to have scales introduced to the fat cattle section of the Addington market.
The vice-president of the meat and wool executive (Mr A. F. Wright) said he had found stock agents were against the proposal, and he had conveyed this information to South Canterbury which was considering introducing scales at Temuka saleyards. Mr Wright said it had been pointed out to him that scales for weighing cattle would be a charge on the fanners, and that for those who chose, cattle could be sent to the freezing works and paid for on a weight basis. Mr E. W. Turrell of Motukarara, said a buyer had told him that under the present system it was difficult to get near a pen at the time of auction and make an estimate of weight. Mr Wright replied that in buying cattle butchers had not only to asess weight, but also cutability, and yield.
