‘BOTANICAL TREASURE’
Conservation In Antarctic
(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copy rip ht) SANTIAGO (Chile), Nov. 20. Establishment of 15 protected areas for plants and animals in the Antarctic was among recommendations announced at the close of the fourth consultative meeting of the Antarctic Treaty on Friday. Conservation of flora and fauna in Antarctica was one of the most discussed topics at the two-week meeting. Mr Julio Escudero, of Chile, president of the meeting, called conservation the most important topic of the conference.
In his address to the closing session, Mr Escudero said: “It has been the unanimous desire of the governments here represented to safeguard for the future of humanity and science the extraordinary zoological and botanical treasure of the Antarctic region.”
