Calwell Argues For Withdrawal
(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) PERTH, November 19. The Opposition Australian Labour Party wants to maintain Australia’s alliance with the United States but disagrees with the American policy in Vietnam, the party leader, Mr Arthur Calwell, said in Perth.
He was addressing an election meeting of more than 3000 persons who gave him an enthusiastic reception.
The meeting was the biggest in Perth since the beginning of the campaign for the November 26 federal elections. Mr Calwell said that President Johnson had told him that the withdrawal of Australian troops from Vietnam would not break Australia’s alliance with the United States. Britain And Canada "President Johnson would like to see us committed in Vietnam, as he would like to see Britain and Canada,” Mr Calwell said. “Britain has no troops in Vietnam, only volunteers east of Suez and no conscripts anywhere. "Why should there be any feeling that we should be in a different position than Britain and Canada?” Move Considered.
