DAMAGE SLIGHT
Little damage appeared to have been done to market gardens, nurseries or orchards by the hail which fell in Upper Riccarton and parts of Fendalton yesterday. Mr L. A. Hampton, a nurseryman in Middleton road, said there had been some damage to plants ready for bedding but he had known worse. Damage would have been greater had it been earlier in the season.
Although there was a terrific quantity of hail, the most he had ever seen, the particles were neither very large nor hard, said Mr Hampton. No glass had been broken but hail was still piled a foot high against glasshouses at 7 p.m.
A little more than half a mile away in Yaldhurst road Mr H. G. Gillman said there had been practically no hail and no damage. Growers in other parts of the city said they had had plenty of rain but little or no hail.
