Two Storms In Rangiora
A thunderstorm brought a sudden weather change to Rangiora about 1 p.m. yesterday. Although only 17 points of rain fell, the brief downpour flooded many gutters and ponds formed in some streets.
The weather had been fine and sunny most of the morning, with temperatures reaching 65 degrees. The change sent people scuttling for cover.
The rain and hail stopped after about three-quarters of an hour and the surface water dispersed quickly.
After a lull a second storm struck Rangiora about 5.30 p.m.. repeating the flooding. Rain fell steadily during the early evening. A wide area of North Canterbury was without electricity for two. or three minutes about 1 p.m.
Neither the North Canterbury Electric Power Board nor the Electricity Department at Southbrook knew the source or cause of the fault. Part of the board’s area north of Amberley was without electricity for about a quarter of an hour from 1.50 IP.m. after lightning caused a I fault in an Electricity Department supply line. Lightning caused transformers to “trip over" in the Cust- . Springbank district and on j the outskirts of Rangiora. The imost severe jolt, about 1.50 J p.m., is believed to have i struck just east of Rangiora.
