Complaint About Fumes
A complaint had again been made by > the Ham Action Committee that sulphur dioxide fumes were causing a nuisance from the boiler-house chimney at Ham University, the Waimairi County Council was told on Thursday night. The council decided that it would take no action in the meantime, would make more investigations next year during periods of maximum loading at the boiler-house, and would also check smoke from the hot-water boiler chimney at the School of Art. The health inspector (Mr R. H. Gee) said that inspections did not show evidence of excessive sulphur dioxide from the boiler-house, or that high Sulphur-content coal was being used. The chimney height, 150 ft, was higher than would normally be required, so disposal of gases should be satisfactory. The Art School
boiler chimney did not appear to be high enough. Name Change.—Although 33 residents protested by petition, the council decided to proceed by special order to change the name of Annandale street to Maidstone road. New Bridge.—After considering tenders of £7960 and £10,388 for extension of the Styx River bridge at Gardiners road, the council agreed to call tenders for an alternative design, and to ask the Drainage Board, in view of its extensive requirements, to contribute.
Sheldon Park.—A tender of £630 was accepted for improving the conveniences at Sheldon Park, Belfast, and a tender of £421 was accepted for re-surfacing the basketball court. Tractor Gift.—Told by its lawyers that liability for accident would be the same as for other playground equipment, requiring proof of negligence by the council, and against which it was insured, the council accepted from the Bryndwr Round Table a gift of an old tractor, to be installed at Burnside Park.
