EMERSON AGAIN
Stolle Tires In Final (N.Z. Press Assn —Copyright* BRISBANE. Australia's R. Emerson showing a welcome return to form, won his fifth Queensland singles championship in the last 10 years when he beat F. S. Stolle. 4-6. 6-3. 04. 3-6. 6-2, in 122 minutes at
Brisbane yesterday. Emerson, after losing his service in the first game of the match, never looked back. It was evident in the early stages of the final set that the long five-set matches which had marked Stolle’s earlier contests had drained his reserves of stamina. Miss L. R. Turner, of Australia, continued to show improved form by beating the 19-year-old Victorian. Miss K. Melville, in the women’s final. Miss Turner was full of confidence. Nervous in the first set. Miss Melville made a fight of it in the second, but was never a real threat. The Australian junior singles champion, K. Coombes hit too many good backhands for the New Zealander, B. E. Fairlie whom he beat 6-4, 6-4. Fairlie said afterwards that he could not serve well to the forehand side and whenever he served to the backhand he expected trouble. Fairlie, who reached the final of the Wimbledon junior singles this year, was too solid and consistent for I. Fletcher (New South Wales) in the boys’ semi-final, which he won 6-4, 6-2. He was less successful In the boys’ doubles final when he teamed with I. Weatherhog (Queensland). They were beaten 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 by D. Smith (Queensland) and P. Dent (New South Wales).
