FORCE IN RUGBY
Japan New Threat (N.Z. Press Association* WELLINGTON. Japan will soon become a force in international Rugby, in the view of I. N. Mac Ewan, captain of the Wellington club side, Athletic. Athletic returned to Wellington yesterday after a 12match tour of England, Ireland and Japan. Mac Ewan, a former All Black, said at Wellington airport: “There’s a tremendous character in Japan Rugby. Their sportsmanship, ethics and spirit would be unmatched anywhere in the world.
“They’re very keen, although they’ve still got a lot to learn. “New Zealand sides can help them, though they can also teach us, especially in the basic skills of back play.” Mac Ewan said that the Japanese team, Doshisha University, and the English club, Bristol, were the toughest teams Athletic had played. “These sides were the ones which really outclassed us,” he said. Although the team had lost six games, the tour had been “most successful.” “It all boils down to whether you judge a tour’s success on the games won and lost,” Mac Ewan added.
